The threat of Artificial Intelligence

Artificial intelligence (AI) is not only revolutionizing the technology industry, but also the world of cybercrime. According to Christian Baumgartner from the Carinthian State Criminal Police Office, the number of internet scams will rise drastically through the use of AI. A frightening example is the case of an 82-year-old Carinthian man who was defrauded of nearly 500,000 euros by scammers. This case is just one of 65,864 cybercrime cases reported in Austria in 2023. More than half of these incidents are cases of fraud, which underlines the urgency of the situation. More about this here.

What to do if you become a victim?

If you have fallen victim to a cybercrime attack, swift and decisive action is crucial. The following steps should be taken immediately:

  1. Seek professional help – Experts in the fields of cybercrime, blockchain forensics, and compliance can play a crucial role in tracing lost funds and initiating legal action.
  2. File a report The first step is immediate reporting to the police or the competent law enforcement agency. Document all relevant evidence, such as emails, messages, or transaction details.
  3. Inform bank or payment service provider – If an unauthorized payment has been made, the bank or payment provider should be contacted immediately. In some cases, a chargeback can be initiated.
  4. Tracking of cryptocurrencies - If the money was transferred in cryptocurrencies, there are ways to trace it. Using blockchain analysis tools, the flow of funds can be tracked and, under certain circumstances, recipients identified.
  5. Recovery of the money – If payments were made to identifiable recipients, legal means can be used to attempt to recover them. In this context, preliminary injunctions or lawsuits for the surrender of the unlawfully obtained assets are conceivable.
  6. Review of insurance benefits – Some insurance policies offer protection against cybercrime damages. A look at the policy terms and conditions can clarify whether a claim exists.

Prevention and legal support

Prevention is the best protection against cybercrime. Companies and individuals should take security measures to protect themselves against attacks and report suspicious activities immediately.
