Bitpanda crypto deposit paused

Has Bitpanda paused your crypto deposit? We explain what wallet verification, the Travel Rule, and proof of source of funds mean – and how ATB.LAW can help.

A growing number of Bitpanda users are receiving emails stating that a crypto deposit has been paused. The reason: The transaction details could not be conclusively confirmed. In these cases, Bitpanda is requesting further information about the sending wallet or the origin of the transferred crypto assets.

Many of those affected are unsettled. They do not know what information is being requested, what is legally expected of them, and how they should sensibly respond.

This post explains why such requests occur, what proof of origin of funds means in the crypto sector, and what role the so-called Travel Rule plays in this context. In addition, we show why it can be advisable to seek legal support in this situation.

Why is a crypto deposit paused on Bitpanda?

A paused crypto deposit does not automatically mean that criminal charges are being brought or that the transferred crypto assets are being permanently withheld. It is usually a compliance review within the scope of legal or regulatory requirements.

Crypto service providers like Bitpanda, as regulated companies, are required to review certain information regarding incoming crypto transfers. This can be for various reasons.

Wallet Verification and Regulatory Compliance Obligations

Bitpanda and other crypto service providers are required to verify the origin of the crypto assets and the association of the wallet involved with the customer for certain transactions. This is part of the legal obligations for the prevention of money laundering.

Possible triggers for such an audit can include, among others:

  • Missing information to the sending wallet
  • Unclear assignment the wallet to the customer
  • Deposits from self-hosted wallets (privately managed wallets without exchange association)
  • Deposits from other crypto exchanges
  • Complex transaction histories or transfers across multiple wallets
  • DeFi transactions, bridges, or other risk-prone patterns
  • Incomplete documentation on the economic origin of crypto assets

None of these points constitutes an accusation in itself. However, as part of an automated or manual AML check, they may lead to a follow-up inquiry.

Travel Rule and Transfer of Funds Regulation

The so-called Travel Rule is internationally known and was in the European Union by the Regulation (EU) 2023/1113 the Transfer of Funds Regulation – bindingly regulated.

This regulation obligates regulated Crypto-Asset Service Providers (CASPs) to collect, transmit, and verify specific information about the originator and the beneficiary in crypto transfers. The goal is to make crypto transactions more traceable and to hinder money laundering and terrorist financing.

In practical terms, this means: When crypto assets are transferred from an external wallet to a Bitpanda account, Bitpanda must be able to trace in certain cases who is behind this wallet. If this association cannot be established automatically, a manual review is required – and often associated with a request to the customer.

What does proof of source of funds mean for cryptocurrencies?

One Proof of origin of funds is the verifiable presentation of where the deposited crypto assets originate. It is intended to make it plausible that the transferred crypto assets come from legitimate sources.

It is usually not sufficient to simply explain that the funds come „from one's own assets.“ The presentation must be comprehensible, structured, and free of contradictions.

Which documents may be relevant?

Depending on the individual case, different documents and information may be relevant for a reliable proof of origin of funds:

  • Purchase receipts for crypto assets (e.g., purchase confirmations from exchanges)
  • Exchange histories and bank statements from crypto platforms
  • Wallet addresses and Transaction hashes
  • Screenshots from wallets or exchanges for transaction documentation
  • Tax documents (e.g., crypto tax reporting)
  • Proof of salary or income as proof of origin for fiat funds
  • Bank statements to check the plausibility of the time and amount of the purchase
  • Gift or loan agreements for crypto transfers from third parties
  • Proof of mining, staking, airdrops, or DeFi income
  • Documentation of the transaction chain across multiple wallets
  • Blockchain analytics to trace the origin
  • Association of wallet addresses Regarding the customer

The specifically required proof depends on the individual case. The decisive factor is that the entire economic origin of the crypto assets can be presented in a coherent manner – from the original source to the current deposit. Why simple explanations are often not enough

Many affected individuals respond to Bitpanda's inquiries with a brief explanation or a single screenshot. That can be sufficient – but it does not have to be. Especially in the case of larger amounts, complex wallet structures, or long transaction histories, regulated crypto service providers expect more detailed and structured documentation.

Incomplete, ambiguous, or contradictory information may lead to further inquiries, longer delays, or, in the worst case, the rejection of the deposit. It is therefore worth preparing the response carefully.

Typical problems with crypto transactions

Not every deposit triggers an investigation. However, certain combinations increase the likelihood of an inquiry.

Self-Hosted Wallets

At Self-Hosted Wallets – also wallets managed by the customer themselves that are not associated with a regulated exchange – an automatic assignment to the customer is not possible. Manual proof is required here, such as a so-called Proof of Wallet Ownership as well as a representation of the origin of the crypto assets contained therein.

Transfers from other exchanges

If you transfer crypto assets from another crypto exchange to Bitpanda, you may need to prove that the account on the source exchange is also in your own name. In addition, documentation of the transactions made there may be required.

DeFi, Bridges, Staking, Mining and complex transaction chains

Crypto assets that, through DeFi protocols, yield farming, liquidity mining, staking, token bridges or Mining arisen often require particularly careful documentation. The transaction chains are frequently complex, the origin not obvious at first glance. In these cases, a Blockchain analysis be necessary to transparently present the origin of the values.

Were crypto assets transferred via protocols or services that exhibit increased levels of anonymity – such as certain Mixing services or Coinjoins –, particularly thorough review and preparation are required.

How ATB.LAW helps with a paused Bitpanda deposit

ATB.LAW operates at the intersection of criminal law, crypto compliance, anti-money laundering, blockchain forensics, and regulatory law. Our team assists clients in structuring crypto-related matters and communicating with crypto service providers in a legally secure manner.

Analysis of the request

In the first step, we analyze the request from Bitpanda. What specific information is being requested? On what legal basis is the inquiry founded? What is reasonable, and what is necessary? This assessment forms the basis for all further steps.

Structured proof of origin of funds

We assist in the creation of a structured and comprehensible proof of origin of funds. This means: We help to trace the economic origin of the crypto assets step by step, compile the relevant documents, and prepare them in a form that meets the requirements of a regulated crypto asset service provider.

Processing of wallet and transaction data

Complex wallet structures or long transaction chains cannot always be easily visualized. We assist with the Documentation of wallet addresses, transaction hashes and exchange histories, as well as in the classification of blockchain analyses.

Communication with Bitpanda

In some cases, direct and legally secure communication with the crypto service provider is advisable. ATB.LAW can assist with or handle this communication – particularly when further inquiries are to be expected, the situation escalates, or the delay becomes disproportionately long.

Bitpanda crypto deposit paused – react now in time

A paused crypto deposit is inconvenient, but usually resolvable. The key is to proceed in a structured manner: do not reply unprepared, do not provide contradictory information, and do not carelessly transmit sensitive information.

Anyone who cannot fully categorize Bitpanda's request or is unsure which documents are useful should seek legal advice early on. The sooner a clear strategy is established, the better the situation can be handled.
